Abstract

Walter B. Cannon (1871-1945) est l’une des figures majeures de la physiologie moderne. Ces deux séries de conférences inédites qu’il délivre en français lors d’un séjour à Paris au début de l’année 1930, représentent un moment charnière dans son parcours intellectuel. Elles lui serviront de base à la rédaction de son ouvrage phare La sagesse du corps. Capitales pour l’histoire de la physiologie et de la médecine du 20 e siècle, ces sources éclairent l’émergence du concept de stress, qui, avec les problématiques médicales et sociales qu’il soulève, trouve un écho particulier dans les sciences biomédicales contemporaines.

Abstract

One of the challenges faced by every cell as well as by whole organisms is to maintain appropriate concentrations of essential nutrient metals while excluding nonessential toxic metals. Toward that end, all organisms have developed mechanisms for metal homeostasis and detoxification to maintain metal levels within physiological limits. This book brings together current knowledge of the molecular basis of metal homeostasis and detoxification in various eukaryotic model systems, including yeasts, plants, and mammals. It focuses on the cellular systems controlling metal transport, intracellular distribution, and immobilization as well as on systems regulating metal-dependent transcription. In addition to environmental aspects (including phytoremediation), the book treats the pathophysiology of metal deficiency and overload in relation to disease.

Abstract

The risk assessment approach described in this monograph applies only to essential trace elements (ETEs) involved in human health and not to non-essential elements. The purpose of this monograph is to provide the scientific principles that support the concept of an ''acceptable range of oral intake'' (AROI), which uses a ''homeostatic model'' for determining the range of dietary intakes for essential trace elements (ETEs) that meet the nutritional requirements of a healthy population and avoid excess intakes.
